Sree Narayana College, Alathur, affiliated to the University of Calicut was established by the Sree Narayana Trusts in 1970 to fulfill the long-felt need of the people of Alathur to have a fullfledged college to meet the rising demand for the greater facilities in the field of higher education. This glorious venture of Sree Narayana Trusts and the initiative of philanthropists like Sri. K.C.Pazhanimala and Sri. C. V. Muthuvelan helped in tackling the major problem of higher education in a backward place like Alathur. The college was inaugurated by Sri. R.Sankar, former Chief Minister and Founder Secretary of the S. N. Trusts, Kollam on 8th July 1970.

August 1856 when a child was born in a humble cottage in the pretty hamlet of Chempazhanthi near Trivandrum, no one knew it marked the dawn of the most remarkable epoch in the social evolution of Kerala.
